GST provide 15 digit alphanumeric unique identification number to a person who gets registered under the GST Law. The allocation of GST Number to the taxpayer is based on Pan and State of the applicant. The First Two code of a GST Registration number represents the GST State Code. (Please check below GST State Code list). The next 10 digits of a GST Registration number represent the PAN of the applicant. The 13 digit is based on the number of registration done by the firm within a state under the same PAN. The 14 digit will be the alphabet “Z” by default. The last 15 digit is call the check code to detect error and can be denoted by either a number of an alphabet.

Verification of a GST Number:-Some firm charging GST using the invalid or fake GST number to charge extra GST from the customer and avoid taxes under GST Regulations. In case you have any doubts on GST number printed in the invoice then you may check the validity of the GST number mentioned in the invoice.
Just follow the given below steps to check the validity of the GST Number.
- Go to GST portal by clicking at https://www.gst.gov.in
- Click on Search Taxpayer
- Now Click on Search by GSTIN/UIN. After clicking on “Search by GSTIN/UIN” a new window will be open
- Now enter GST Number you wish to verify in the search box along with captcha code.
- If the GST Number is an Invalid one then the website will display a message saying “error”. If GST number is valid then following details will be appear in front of you
- Legal Name of Business
- Trade Name
- Effective date of registration
- Constitution of business
- GSTIN Status (Active or Inactive)
- Taxpayer Type
